Proposed anti-cruising bylaw extended in Christchurch

A proposed anti-car cruising bylaw in Christchurch has been extended.

City councillors added to the draft bylaw after hearing submissions on Friday.

The council is the first in New Zealand to consider exercising new local government powers that enable it to ban cruising on certain streets to combat so-called boy racers.

The draft bylaw issued for public consultation proposed prohibiting cruising on all multi-lane streets, the waterfront road to Sumner and the Esplanade from Thursday to Sunday nights.

Councillors have extended that to seven nights and included more streets.

The draft bylaw attracted 36 submissions. Nineteen were opposed and 17 supported it.

Police support the proposed bylaw, but warn there will always be some who find ways to manipulate it.

Councillors say they do not expect the bylaw to spell the end of the South Island city's boy racing culture, but are confident it is another step along that road.

The amended bylaw still has to be adopted by the council.
