A swarm of earthquakes has been recorded off Gisborne in the past 24 hours.
Six quakes measuring between magnitude 3.9 and 4.5 have occurred in the Hikurangi trough since half past 10.30am on Tuesday.
They were centred about 30km south-east of Tolaga Bay at a depth of 33km.
The latest was at 2.48am on Wednesday. It was magnitude 4.2.
