Mayors on the West Coast say they are determined to cash in on the 2011 Rugby World Cup even though there are no games or teams assigned to the region.

The Grey District is putting $20,000 into marketing and other councils are expected to do the same.

Grey District mayor Tony Kokshoorn says money from the council will be used for promotion and a whitebait and beer festival to attract fans.

Westland District mayor Maureen Pugh says her council has $20,000 earmarked in its annual plan for promoting the coast in 2011.

Buller mayor Pat McManus says he supports the plan, but it needs a substantial contribution to make it worthwhile.
