Wellington abattoir fined after safety breach

6:07 am on 15 April 2010

The Taylor Preston abattoir in Wellington faces a heavy fine after its fourth conviction in five years for breaching workplace health and safety laws.

The latest incident involved the partial amputation of a man's finger in January 2009, while he was handling an unguarded hock cutter on a meat processing chain.

The company was fined $35,000 and ordered to pay reparation of $5000 after court proceedings this week.

The Department of Labour says the latest incident indicates a weak culture of safety.
