Battle looms over shifting of memorial

A battle is brewing over the placement of an Auckland memorial that celebrates the women who fought for the right to vote.

Auckland City Council's advisory panel for public art wants the council to move the tiled mural in Khartoum Place as part of an upgrade of the area.

But a spokesperson for the National Council of Women, Margaret Wilson, says the memorial is a valuable part of the city's heritage and needs to be protected.

The council has said it will preserve the tiled mural, but will not commit to keeping it where it is.
