The last stretch of gravel road on State Highway 1 has been sealed in the Far North.

The Transport Agency has been working on a $19 million project to seal the road to Cape Reinga since 2007.

Contractors sealed the final 100 metres of the road near Waitiki Landing on Thursday morning.

The Transport Agency says it is a milestone in the development of New Zealand roads.

It says motorists can now drive the entire 2022km of State Highway 1 from Bluff to Cape Reinga on a sealed surface.
