The design for Auckland's super-city logo has been decided.
A stylised red pohutukawa, with seven stamens representing the seven Auckland cities and districts and surrounded by a green koru was designed by retired commercial artist Jim Dean.
The Auckland Transition Agency launched the competition in February after it was announced a new logo is a legal requirement ahead of the pre-election campaign. About 1500 entries were received.
Mr Dean, 69, says he is not worried about the scrutiny from the public of his design because the seven-member judging panel all liked it.
He will now work with professional designers to refine the design into the final official logo.
Meanwhile, the head of a panel which selected the design says there are no similarities with an old Auckland Regional Council parks department logo, which also features a pohutukawa.
Waitakere City Mayor Bob Harvey says Mr Dean's design was the clear stand-out winner, as it had a freshness about it and cannot be compared to other logos.
