Fisheries office at Kaikoura

10:22 am on 26 April 2010

The Ministry of Fisheries is to open an office in Kaikoura - its first permanent presence there for more than 20 years.

Two fulltime officers will be employed. The office is due to open before the start of summer.

Because of the growth of Kaikoura as a tourist attraction, the ministry says there are more recreational fishermen and more fish thieves there.

In the past, coverage of Kaikoura was provided by fisheries officers from Blenheim and Nelson.
