Timaru mayor welcomes move to pass gang patch by-laws

5:10 pm on 25 April 2010

The Timaru District Mayor says the ability to pass by-laws banning gang patches, without the need for a special local act of Parliament, is another step forward in fighting organised crime.

Local Government New Zealand is seeking national legislation allowing other councils to follow Whanganui's lead in banning gang insignia from designated public areas.

Timaru District Mayor Janie Annear says while not every council will choose to enact such a by-law, councils should have the ability to do so.
