Fake notes circulating in Bay of Plenty

10:25 am on 26 April 2010

Police in Tauranga are warning retailers in the Bay of Plenty to be wary of suspicious $50 and $100 notes as they may be counterfeits.

Incidents are being reported in which people have created distractions in store to draw attention away from the fake bank notes which are being presented as payment, police say.

Retailers are urged to check all notes and avoid giving substantial amounts of legal change to customers who are making small purchases with suspicious-looking currency.

Police are asking shop assistants to provide as much information as possible about the offenders and to contact them immediately.
