Doctors claims hospital decision already made

Medical professionals are worried a proposal to upgrade Queenstown's public hospital is setting it up for privatisation.

Southland District Health Board has received hundreds of submissions on its review of Lakes District Hospital.

Association of Salaried Medical Specialists executive director Ian Powell says the consultation process is a sham, as he thinks the DHB has already made up its mind.

He says the board is planning to bring in a private operator to run the hospital, which will lead to a reduction in services and an exodus of doctors.

Southland District Health Board says it disagrees with Mr Powell plans to meet with him in the next few weeks.
