Phone threats earn prisoner more time inside

An inmate at Wanganui Prison has been sentenced to extra jail time as a result of threats to a teenage girl he knew on the outside.

Wanganui police had earlier taken a complaint from the girl's mother. A former partner of the prisoner, she said he had made threatening calls to her 13-year-old daughter from a payphone inside the jail.

She said he'd told the teenager that he would hurt her mother if the pair didn't leave Wanganui.

The Corrections Department was able to retrieve a recording of the call, which confirmed the prisoner had threatened to kill. He was charged by the police and sentenced on Monday to an extra 15 months in jail.

The prisoner, his prior convictions and the complainant have not been identified.
