Hamilton police say an attempted abduction complaint made two weeks ago by a 15-year-old girl was been false.
The girl claimed a man in a ute tried to grab her but she was able to run away.
Police say information from the public confirming sightings of the vehicle said to have been involved gave the complaint credibility.
They say considerable resources were used in what appeared to be a serious risk to the public.
The girl has been cautioned and referred to Youth Aid.
