Mountain bikes allowed on Abel Tasman track again

6:04 am on 1 May 2010

Mountain bikes are allowed on the Abel Tasman walking track, from 1 May, for a second trial winter.

The Department of Conservation is opening the Wainui - Totaranui section, as it decides whether mountain bikers should be permitted to ride the track outside the peak walking season.

DoC says there were two or three complaints from trampers last winter, about groups of bikes suddenly appearing. Cyclists are asked to ride in groups of six or less.

After the trial this year, DoC will decide whether to recommend a permanent bike season.
