Merger of southern health boards takes effect

6:03 am on 1 May 2010

A new Southern District Health Board officially comes into being on 1 May - the result of a merger between the Otago and Southland District Health Boards.

The two boards voted to merge about two months ago, in a bid to improve clinical services and save money.

The chair of the new board is Errol Miller of Otago and his deputy is Paul Menzies of Southland.

All members of both the Otago and Southland DHBs will serve on the new board until local elections are held in October.

Board meetings will alternate between Dunedin and Invercargill, using video conferencing technology.

The first meeting of the Southern District Health Board will be held in Invercargill on Thursday.
