A new marae-based health service in Manurewa aims to use the marae's kaumatua and kuia to help families in difficulty.

Te Manu Aute Whare Oranga is a joint venture between the marae and Counties-Manukau Health. The clinic was officially opened on Friday.

Deputy chair Alec Tairua says it's part of a wider service, Te Rau Korowai, which will use the practical experience of older residents.

He told Waatea News that kuia and kaumatua will help people at their homes.
