Queenstown river level continues to fall

Lake Wakatipu is continuing to slowly fall, as fine weather helps to settle the nerves of retailers in the flood zone in Queenstown.

The lake dropped another 10 centimetres overnight on Monday, but is still 40cm from falling below the flood warning level.

Sand bags and flood protection barriers still line some streets of the South Island resort town and will remain in place for at least another week, the Queenstown Lakes District Council says.

MetService predicts fine weather is set to continue until Thursday. The council says indications are that rain forecast for the weekend will not push the lake up beyond last Saturday's high point, which threatened shops.
