District council merger campaigner undaunted

A Nelson city councillor says the rejection of a petition won't stop his campaign for a merger between the Nelson and Tasman district councils.

The Local Government Commission says it can't consider an amalgamation because the petition does not have enough valid signatures. It says the petition, organised by Nelson councillor Aldo Miccio, has fallen short of the required number of valid signatures.

It had the necessary 10% of Nelson-city-registered voters but the Tasman number was several hundred short.

Mr Miccio says that about 350 - or 1% - of the required Tasman signatories were not on the electoral roll.

Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne says the majority of people in his district are not interested in a merger and the petition should be dropped, but Mr Miccio says he won't give up.

He says he's prepared to re-do the petition.
