Freighter freed from Golden Bay sandbar

4:30 pm on 6 May 2010

A coastal freighter has been re-floated after it got stuck on a sandbar in Golden Bay.

The 48 metre-long Anatoki ran aground on its way from Nelson to Port Tarakohe early on Thursday. The bulk fertiliser carrier was not loaded at the time.

A spokesperson for Port Tarakohe, Jim Frater, says the freighter was pulled free just after 1pm.

Divers will check it for any damage.

Maritime New Zealand says it will investigate the incident.
