A report shows Wellington's Westpac Stadium has injected almost half a billion dollars into the region's economy since it opened 10 years ago.

Some 5.4 million visitors passed through the stadium's turnstiles between 2000 and 2009 to watch events such as the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the rugby sevens and major rock concerts.

Wellington Regional Stadium Trust chief executive David Gray says that has added $484 million into the regional economy - more than double what was forecast before the ground was built.

Mr Gray says initial studies predicted that the ground would hold 14 major events a year, but that figure is now close to 50.

About 670 fulltime jobs have also been created in Wellington, he says.
