An injured climber stranded in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park has been airlifted to safety by a helicopter.

The man, 34, who has a suspected collapsed lung, spent two days in a hut with a rescue team waiting for the weather to clear so the helicopter could attempt the rescue. It is not clear what caused his injury.

Senior Constable Brent Swanson of Tekapo says the man was brought out at about 9.30am on Saturday and flown to Mount Cook village.

He was taken by an ambulance to Timaru Hospital for further treatment.
