Call for bus interchange in New Brighton

Residents of New Brighton in Christchurch say there's a particular urgency for the city council to build a new bus interchange.

They say the interchange needs to be a priority because toilet facilities are needed for drivers and passengers.

The MP for Christchurch East, Liane Dalziel, says some New Brighton residents have to put up with buses idling outside their houses, and drivers relieving themselves in the sand dunes.

The council is being forced to scale back some of its transport projects, including suburban bus interchanges, because of a drop in Transport Authority funding.

Red Bus Ltd chief executive Paul McNoe says he doesn't condone what some drivers have been doing, but it does show there's a need for bus interchanges in the suburbs.
