Boyracer 'skid pad' planners seek ratepayer money

The Christchurch City Council has been asked for $100,000 toward a skid pad designed to help get boyracers off the streets.

Car club Legal Diesels is proposing building the nearly $500,000 skid pad at the Ruapuna raceway.

The members of Legal Diesels, who say they are former boyracers, are confident they can encourage illegal street racers off Christchurch public roads and on to a purpose-built, controlled facility.

They have lodged a submission to the council's annual plan asking for a ratepayer contribution toward the skid pad.

Legal Diesels chairperson Nadra Gosling told city councillors she believes there would be 70% fewer boyracers on the streets if the skid pad goes ahead.

The proposal is supported by some elected representatives. However, councillor Barry Corbett says ratepayers have already paid for a $50,000 dollar burnout pad for boyracers at Ruapuna, which was built 10 years ago.

Legal Diesels says this has been unsuccessful because it is inside the speedway and cannot be accessed when the speedway is in use.

The councillors are hearing submissions on the council's draft annual plan and Ms Gosling's request will be considered further at a future meeting.
