Council warns own department over dumping

Environmental regulators at Wellington Regional Council are to issue a formal warning to the council's Flood Protection Department following an investigation into the dumping of contaminated material at a Wainuiomata landfill last year.

A council investigation found that the Flood Protection Department did not adequately analyse the lead content of the material it excavated from the Waiwhetu stream before dumping it at a landfill that was not certified to receive contaminated matter.

Council spokesperson Alistair Cross says the Resource Management Act was breached, but because the Department has removed the toxic material it will only receive a warning.

Mr Cross says the dumping was not deliberate and there are unlikely to be any health effects.
