Cemetery behaviour bylaw proposed

9:49 am on 25 May 2010

Invercargill City Council is proposing a by-law change to establish minimum standards of behaviour in cemeteries in the city.

Councillor Geoff Piercy says the by-law is designed to deter teenagers from drinking alcohol and playing up in the graveyards late at night.

Of the city's five cemeteries, the largest one in eastern Invercargill is the one most targeted.

Those found breaking the by-law could face fines of up to $20,000.
