DHB staff had affairs with mental health patient

Whanganui District Health Board says two staff had inappropriate relationships with a woman undergoing mental health care.

It says at least one of the relationships was consensual. but patients deserve protection from such behaviour.

The first affair took place a year ago while the patient, 24, was on leave from inpatient care at the mental health unit at Whanganui Hospital.

The healthcare assistant involved resigned before an investigation was complete.

Another assistant had a relationship with the woman after she moved home. His employment is suspended during an ongoing investigation.

Chief executive Julie Patterson says the DHB acted as soon as the relationships came to light.

The Ministry of Health says it is investigating to ensure staff working with acutely unwell and vulnerable patients are appropriately trained and supervised.
