Tougher controls on wind machines at vineyards

Tougher conditions are to be imposed on the use of wind machines used to fight frosts on Marlborough vineyards.

Neighbours of vineyards are against the use of the wind fans, saying they cannot sleep at night because of the noise.

A Marlborough District Council committee has decided t6hat the use of fans will now be controlled, rather than permitted, meaning a resource consent will be needed.

The allowable decibel level of machine noise has also been lowered from 60 to 55 decibels within 300 metres of a residence.

Wairau Valley resident Richard Ryan, who lives near 64 fans, says the five-decibel cut will not be enough to end his sleepless nights.
