New super-city roles mostly go to outsiders

The first senior management roles in the new Auckland Council have gone mostly to those outside the region.

Only two of the seven jobs have been filled from within councils in Auckland: Auckland City's head of finance Andrew McKenzie becomes the chief financial officer and Shelley Watson becomes the manager of communications and public affairs, similar to her current role at the Auckland Regional Transport Authority.

Porirua City Council chief executive Roger Blakely will be the chief planning officer and Patricia Reade from the Minister of Social Development will be the chief operating officer.

The chief executive, already announced, is Auckland businessman Doug McKay.

The council comes into being on 1 November, replacing eight councils.
