A 24-year-old woman charged with assaulting a new-born baby in Murupara appeared before the Rotorua District Court today.
Police were called to an incident in Miro Drive yesterday and arrested a woman soon after.
Tania Rolleston, who is also known at Tania Hunt, is in custody for a psychiatric assessment and is due to reappear before the court in two weeks.
The baby, who is seven days old, was taken to Rotorua Hospital.
Detectives are investigating.
