Residents in East Auckland have won a fight to have the name of a community board in the new super-city changed.
The Local Government Commission had picked the name Te Irirangi for the Botany, Howick and Pakuranga board.
Residents and council politicians campaigned to get the name switched to Howick, saying Te Irirangi did not reflect the area's history or identity.
Local Government Minister Rodney Hide put an amendment before Parliament this week to make that change.
Mr Hide says the name is obviously important to the people in the area.
