Airbase scare over: parcel was not a bomb

6:01 pm on 2 June 2010

A bomb scare at Ohakea airbase is over: the suspicious package turned out to be a delivery of military fatigues.

Air Force Squadron Leader Kavae Tamariki says the parcel was dropped off by a courier to a clothing store at the base at about 3pm today.

Staff became concerned when they were unable to read the label on the package, and the decision was made to treat it as an improvised explosive device.

The store was cordoned off and the police bomb disposal unit called, but when the package was opened it turned out to contain clothing.

Mr Tamariki says the staff followed proper Air Force protocol in dealing with unidentified packages.
