Police have arrested a 60-year-old man in central Wellington, as part of a crackdown on drug dealers supplying morphine sulphate tablets.

They say 817 morphine tablets were found at his address, with a street value of $48170, on Thursday morning.

Police say there has been an increase in the Wellington district in hospital admissions and deaths directly related to overdoses by drug users converting morphine tablets into heroin.

They say over the last six months officers have seized more than 1350 tablets and have arrested and charged six different offenders with supplying the drug.
