Ellerslie Flower Show loss blamed on recession

The Christchurch City Council says the recession, compounded by bad weather, is the reason the Ellerslie Flower Show lost $88,000 this year.

The loss will be covered by the $224,000 profit made last year, the first time Christchurch hosted the event. The council bought the five-day show in 2007.

It says the $15 million injected into the local economy by the 57,000 people who attended this year's event was $5 million less than last year, when 75,000 people visited.

But it says past and new designers are already registering their interest in exhibiting next year.
