Injured Mt Taranaki tramper makes it out

2:05 pm on 8 June 2010

An injured tramper who had to spend three nights on Mt Taranaki has finally made it out.

The 51-year-old Auckland man went up the mountain on Saturday morning but injured his leg the next day while coming down.

Sergeant Andrew Ross from Search and Rescue says the man then returned to Syme Hut and called police, but bad weather hampered rescue efforts.

He says the man walked out at Dawson's Falls shortly before 1pm on Tuesday, with help from alpine cliff rescue and police search and rescue teams.

Sgt Ross says the man has gone to hospital to have his injured knee checked over but is otherwise fine.
