A pilot has sustained facial injuries after a microlight plane crashed into a paddock near the town of Opunake in Taranaki.

Police say the craft crashed near an airstrip just before 11am on Wednesday.

They say it appears the pilot attempted to abort a landing and regain some height. However the craft crashed into some rocks.

The man, aged, 37, from Stratford, freed himself and was taken to Taranaki base hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
