Drivers are being warned to show caution on State Highway 1 between Rangipo and Waiouru.
The Desert Road reopened on Wednesday but drivers are still being warned to drive to the winter conditions, as there is snow on the road.
Police say several cars were excavated on the Desert Road early on Tuesday morning after getting stuck in the snow overnight.
