Wellington bus passengers are likely to be hit especially hard in the pocket, if the regional council approves across-the-board fare increases for buses and trains.
Most single cash fares are likely to rise by 50 cents. Greater Wellington Regional Council says the fare rises are partly to take into account the Government's decision to raise GST to 15%.
A spokesperson for the lobby group Public Transport Voice, Paula Warren, says increasing train fares when the services are not up to scratch may result in fewer people using the trains.
