Christchurch mayor brushes off bad poll result

8:07 am on 16 June 2010

Christchurch mayor Bob Parker says a poll showing that his main opponent in this year's mayoral race is in the lead should be taken with a grain of salt.

The latest mayoralty race survey of 350 Christchurch residents by UMR shows that in a multi-candidate contest 46% would vote for Mr Anderton and 21% for Mr Parker.

Another 22% said they were unsure whom to vote for, and 11% said they would vote for other candidates.

The survey also shows 63% of residents have a positive opinion of Mr Anderton while 35% have a favourable opinion of Mr Parker.

The survey was conducted between 27 May and 7 June, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.2%.

Mr Parker says the poll results shouldn't be taken seriously, but Mr Anderton says residents are not happy with the way the council is being run.

Both candidates say they're confident of winning the mayoral race.
