The Government has released designs for a new $8 million ocean water sports centre in Auckland.

To be used for yachting, kayaking and triathlons, it will be built on the beachfront in Takapuna.

The chief executive of Yachting New Zealand, Des Brennan, says the pupose-built centre will prepare sailors for competitions by offering the best possible facilities.

Mr Brennan says other countries are already building similar high- performance centres and New Zealand needs to keep up.

The Government and the North Shore City Council each intend to contribute $3 million to the centre; the balance will be raised by the sporting sector.
