A group of Dunedin business owners is threatening legal action against Mercury Energy, which enticed them to switch to Mercury for significant savings and then withdrew the offer.

More than 400 businesses accepted Mercury's offer of up to 30% savings on their power bills, but the power company reneged when it realised it had made a pricing error.

At a meeting on Tuesday night, 40 businesses decided to refuse the company's new offer of half the original savings.

The chief executive of the Otago Chamber of Commerce, John Christie, says the businesses are seeking legal advice about what to do next.

Mr Christie expressed frustratation that Mercury didn't front up at the meeting.
