A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the East Coast of the North Island just after 6pm on Saturday.
The earthquake struck 90 kilometres north-east of Gisborne at a depth of 50km and may have been felt in Tokomaru Bay.
There have been no reports of damage.
