A user of the toll road north of Auckland is facing a $19,000 penalty for almost 500 unpaid trips.

At the beginning of the month, the New Zealand Transport Agency wrote to people with unpaid trips on the Northern Gateway Toll Road telling them to pay their debts or face a $40 infringement notice for each one.

The agency's regional director for Auckland, Wayne McDonald, says it received more than $4,000 for about 800 trips after sending out the letters.

But Mr McDonald says the worst offender will be getting notices totalling $19,000, plus a bill for the unpaid trips.
