Sacked regional councillor to stand in Waimakariri

11:38 am on 23 June 2010

The former deputy chairperson of the Canterbury Regional Council, Jo Kane, has announced she will run for mayor of the Waimakariri district.

Ms Kane was one of the regional councillors sacked by the Government in March.

She believes all councils are in for a shake-up in the next three years - as has happened in Auckland - and says the experience she gained at the regional council will help her lead Waimakariri through this.

Ms Kane is a former deputy mayor of Waimakariri, in north Canterbury, and says the district will have to adapt to what she believes will be a central Government push toward amalgamations and unitary authorities.
