State Highway 75 connecting Akaroa and Christchurch is open again.
A huge slip, which brought down mud and trees, closed the road between Tai Tapu and Little River on Sunday.
The Transport Agency advises motorists to take extra care.
Accommodation in Little River was booked out and members of the community took in about 10 people who could not make it back to Christchurch on Sunday night.
Earlier, the owner of the Grand Hotel in Akaroa, Eric Ryder, said the road had been closed only three times in 20 years and townspeople were not concerned.
