Christchurch boy racer ban takes effect

7:31 am on 1 July 2010

A bylaw aimed at getting boy racers off Christchurch streets takes on Thursday, banning cruising on all multi-lane streets.

Christchurch City is the first local council to exercise powers under a law enabling local authorities to prohibit car cruising in certain areas.

Among the streets where cruising will be banned are four avenues notorious for boy racers, the waterfront road to Sumner and its Esplanade.

The bylaw describes cruising as driving repeatedly along the same stretch of road, or in a convoy.

The ban will apply every night, from 10pm until 5am.

Police don't anticipate any problems on Thursday night, saying the boy racers appeared to have their last hurrah on Saturday, with about 30% more cars than usual on the city's streets.
