Primary health changes proposed for Hawke's Bay

7:48 am on 2 July 2010

Hawke's Bay District Health Board is proposing a new model of primary health care for the region it says will be more patient focused and less bureaucratic.

Submissions closed on Friday on a discussion document that proposes eliminating the existing three Primary Health Organisations (PHOs).

Instead, there would be either a single PHO or a new primary care division within the Board.

The DHB's chief executive, Kevin Snee, says more integration is needed between primary and secondary care.

The local Maori Health provider and the PHO that covers Napier, Hastings and Central Hawke's Bay favour one Primary Health Organisation.
