Fewer boyracers about as bylaw takes effect

6:17 am on 4 July 2010

Police in Christchurch say a ban on cruising appears to be reducing the number of boyracers on the road, but it is too early to tell for sure.

Boyracers caused very little trouble in the city on Saturday night and no tickets have yet been issued under a new bylaw that came into effect on 1 July.

The bylaw prohibits anyone from driving repeatedly along the same stretch of road on all multi-lane streets in the city between 10pm - 5am.

Those who breach the bylaw could receive a $150 ticket or a fine of up to $1000.

However, police say a large convoy gathered in Kaiapoi on Friday night, which shows the boyracers are already attempting to move elsewhere.
