Family day for football fans

5:00 pm on 4 July 2010

Fans turned out in force to mix with players from the All Whites World Cup squad during the Phoenix Football Club's family day at Westpac stadium in Wellington on Sunday.

Phoenix and All Whites players Mark Paston, Tim Brown, Tony Lochhead, Ben Sigmund and Leo Bertos were joined by coach Ricki Herbert in a range of activities for fans.

Queues formed around the field for autographs and pictures with the players.

Ricki Herbert says it has given him a taste of the hype he missed out on while at the World Cup and it feels good to be home.

Phoenix chief executive Nathan Greenham says football is on a huge high in New Zealand and the club hopes events like this will get more people involved in the game.

The day marks the beginning of the club's next A-league campaign.

In the meantime, the Phoenix will play a friendly match against the Boca Juniors from Argentina at the stadium on 23 July.
