Two kayakers are in hospital after being rescued from Island Bay on Wellington's south coast.
Locals called emergency services after seeing two kayaks wash up on shore, without their occupants.
By the time a maritime search had been launched, the pair had been pulled from the water by ambulance staff.
They are being treated for moderate injuries.
