Chunk of much-used Whangarei road washed away

A much-used Whangarei route is closed to all traffic, following a major slip caused by days of heavy rain.

Mount Tiger Road, north-east of the city, is used by many people to travel between Whangarei Harbour and the eastern coast.

The Whangarei District Council says a large chunk has slid away 2.7 kilometres from the northern end of the road, about 20 metres of which is now missing.

The council is appealing to motorists not to remove barriers, as more of the road is likely to slip in the next few days.

While it will try to create temporary access by cutting back the bank on the top side of the road, it says, permanent repairs will take weeks.
